Kendrapara, Oct 31 The body of a 20-year-old college student, with her throat slit, was found in a water-filled ditch in Odisha’s Kendrapara district on Saturday, police said.
The incident took place at Jadupur village under Marshaghai police station limits in the coastal district, the police said.
The deceased, Sasmita Behera, had been missing since Friday evening, following which her family launched a search. Some locals spotted her body in the ditch near the village on Saturday morning and alerted the police.
Police recovered a blood-stained knife from near the ditch. A forensic team and dog squad also examined the crime scene. The exact cause of death will be known after the post-mortem examination, a police officer said.
Marshaghai police station inspector-in-charge Tapan Nayak said, “We are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas to gather clues. A case has been registered under Sections 103 (murder) and 238 (causing disappearance of evidence) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).”
Sasmita was a Plus III (degree) Arts student at Marshaghai College. Senior police officers are investigating the case. No arrests have been made so far, he said.
