Jaipur, Oct 30 Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Friday expressed concern over the state of democracy in the country and urged people to participate in the Congress-led INDIA bloc’s November 1 rally in Delhi.
Speaking to reporters here, Gehlot said the country was facing a challenge to safeguard democracy and that the proposed “Save Vote, Save Nation” rally at Ramlila Maidan held particular significance.
He appealed to Congress workers, party office-bearers and the public to reach Delhi in large numbers, even if they had to arrange their own transport.
Targeting the BJP, Gehlot accused the ruling party of attempting to portray opposition rallies as efforts to create anarchy.
“When the BJP was in opposition and organised rallies, it claimed to be raising issues concerning the public. Now, when the opposition holds rallies, it is accused of spreading anarchy. These are double standards,” he said.
Gehlot said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other opposition leaders had repeatedly made it clear that governments could be changed only through elections.
He also questioned the BJP’s efforts to counter the opposition rally, claiming that leaders of the ruling party were taking to the streets to oppose a democratic protest.
The former chief minister said the opposition had every right to organise rallies and raise concerns about the country’s democratic institutions.
