Lucknow, Oct 28 Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday congratulated the party candidates who won the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections and urged them to avoid victory processions and instead use social media to declare their success.
The SP has won three of the 11 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council seats, with counting still underway, according to officials. It has secured the Allahabad-Jhansi Graduates’ constituency, the Varanasi Teachers’ constituency and the Agra-Aligarh Teachers’ constituency.
SP’s Lal Bihari Yadav and Akash Agrawal won the Varanasi and Agra-Aligarh Teachers’ constituencies, respectively, while Man Singh Yadav won the Allahabad-Jhansi graduates’ constituency.
The party’s nominees were leading in the Varanasi and Lucknow Graduates’ constituencies.
In a post on X, Yadav cautioned the winners against any activity that could cause disturbance, alleging that the BJP could attempt to create trouble and blame the SP for it ahead of the assembly elections due early next year.
“We have to convey this victory to people peacefully through social media. There should be no noise or processions, so that BJP workers cannot infiltrate our ranks and vitiate the atmosphere or accuse us of creating a ruckus,” he said.
The former chief minister also asked the winning candidates to remain vigilant against alleged conspiracies and false accusations, claiming that the BJP could attempt to tarnish the party’s image.
He said he would personally felicitate all the winners and, if possible, visit their constituencies to honour them.
Yadav also asked the elected MLCs to prepare a list of party workers, office-bearers and well-wishers who supported them during the elections, saying that they would also be honoured for their contribution to the victory.
Yadav alleged that hooliganism, electoral malpractice, vote theft and rigging had become the BJP’s hallmark, claiming that the party could not win elections without such practices as the public was opposed to it.
He alleged that BJP leaders, their associates and officials involved in a conspiracy could stoop to any level to win the MLC elections.
Yadav said the alleged harassment of SP candidate Sanjayan Tripathi from the Gorakhpur Teachers’ constituency had been witnessed by members of his community.
Referring to SP candidates and Akash Agrawal, who contested from the Gorakhpur and Agra Teachers’ constituencies, respectively, Yadav said teachers across the state would not forget the alleged humiliation and mistreatment they had faced.
He also alleged that teachers had been subjected to degrading treatment, including being asked to collect fodder, saying the SP would respond by defeating the BJP in the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
Yadav said the SP would continue to stand with Tripathi and his community against what he described as injustice and persecution by the BJP.
Commenting on the treatment allegedly meted out to newly elected Agra Teachers’ constituency MLC Akash Agrawal, Yadav said the SP candidate’s mistreatment has deeply hurt the Agrawal community, leaving its members feeling betrayed and humiliated.
He said the incident had strengthened the SP’s political outreach under its PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) formulation, adding that the ‘A’ in PDA now also stood for Agrawal communities.
Claiming that the support of the Agrawal community had significantly strengthened the party, Yadav said the political contest had now become a battle between five per cent BJP supporters and 95 per cent PDA supporters.
He added that the ideals of socialist leader Ram Manohar Lohia would continue to guide the SP.
The BJP has won six Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council seats so far.
