Chennai, Oct 24 : Tamil Nadu BJP spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy on Saturday criticised the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), and other political parties for walking out of an Election Commission meeting on the Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls.
Thirupathy accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and his allies of undermining constitutional institutions, including the Election Commission of India (ECI). He also announced a 10-day statewide awareness campaign featuring public rallies, youth programmes and student competitions to counter the opposition’s allegations against the electoral revision process.
The BJP spokesperson claimed that the parties opposing the revision wanted deceased voters and duplicate voter registrations to remain on electoral rolls. He further said the Supreme Court had given a clean chit to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.
The controversy follows Friday’s all-party meeting convened by the Election Commission to discuss the SSR of electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu. Several parties, including the TVK and DMK, walked out of the meeting and demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. They alleged irregularities in the earlier SIR exercise and raised concerns over electoral transparency and the neutrality of the poll panel.
Tamil Nadu BJP Raises Law and Order Concerns
Thirupathy also criticised the Tamil Nadu government over the state’s law and order situation. He alleged that the administration had failed to control crime, particularly incidents involving young women and schoolchildren.
He strongly objected to the reported decision to grant parole to convicts in the Coimbatore blast case, arguing that the government should not show leniency towards those convicted in serious cases.
BJP Questions Tamil Nadu Monsoon Preparedness
The BJP spokesperson also questioned the state’s preparedness for the monsoon season. He alleged that authorities were deploying boats in residential areas instead of completing desilting work in advance to prevent waterlogging and urban flooding.
The remarks have added to the political debate in Tamil Nadu over electoral roll revision, law and order, the handling of convicted prisoners and flood preparedness.
The allegations made by the BJP spokesperson reflect the party’s position on these issues, while the opposition parties have raised separate concerns over the transparency and neutrality of the electoral revision process.
