Chennai, Oct 24 Tamil Nadu BJP spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the political parties, including the ruling TVK and opposition DMK, for walking out of a meeting on Special Summary Revision of electoral rolls here, alleging that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and his allies were attempting to undermine constitutional institutions like the EC.
Speaking to reporters, Thirupathy announced a 10-day state-wide awareness campaign featuring public rallies, youth programmes, and student competitions to expose the opposition’s narrative.
“They (parties) want the names of deceased voters and bogus voters registered at multiple locations to remain on electoral rolls,” he said, claiming that the Supreme Court has already given a clean chit to the SIR process.
Several political parties in Tamil Nadu, including the ruling TVK and the DMK, on Friday walked out of an all-party meeting convened by the EC to discuss the SSR of electoral rolls.
The parties demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the previous Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, accusing the poll panel of “compromising transparency and democratic neutrality”.
Turning to law and order, Thirupathy accused the state government of “failing” to maintain law and order, citing rising crimes against young women and school children.
He also strongly condemned the government’s decision to grant parole to convicts of the Coimbatore blast case, calling them “Islamic fundamentalist terrorists” who should not receive leniency.
Besides, he flayed the administration’s monsoon preparedness, saying officials were deploying boats in residential areas instead of completing desilting work in advance to prevent waterlogging and flooding.
