New Delhi, Oct 24 The Delhi Traffic Police has secured the suspension of 10 driving licences and forwarded 556 proposals to courts and transport authorities for action against traffic violators as part of an intensified enforcement drive in West Delhi, officials said on Saturday.
The drive targets drunken driving, dangerous driving, riding two-wheelers without helmets and habitual traffic violations, aimed at improving road safety and ensuring compliance with the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, they said.
According to the police, 112 proposals have been submitted to courts in drunken-driving cases under Section 185 of the Act, seeking suspension or disqualification of driving licences under Section 20(2), wherever applicable. Courts have ordered the suspension of five licences in these cases.
In cases of dangerous driving, including red-light jumping and driving on the wrong side, 374 proposals have been forwarded to courts along with the relevant challans, seeking suspension of licences under Section 20(1), the police said.
The traffic police are also pursuing action under Section 20(3) in cases involving convictions, wherever applicable.
Habitual and repeat offenders, including those repeatedly violating helmet rules, have been identified based on their traffic violation records, including data from red-light violation detection (RLVD) and over-speed violation detection (OSVD) systems.
The police have also sent 70 proposals to district and regional transport offices in Delhi and other states for action under Section 19 of the Act. The concerned transport authorities have suspended five driving licences following these proposals.
The traffic police is coordinating with local police to strengthen action against dangerous and wrong-side driving; wherever applicable, it is seeking the inclusion of Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act, about dangerous driving, along with Section 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with rash driving or riding on a public way, in FIRs registered on complaints by traffic police personnel.
The police said requests for appropriate action against driving licences are also being made while forwarding chargesheets to courts wherever applicable.
