Pithoragarh, Oct 22 The Govind Ballabh Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment has secured a patent from the central government for a portable tree diameter and plot measurement device, an official said on Thursday.
Dr Indra Datt Bhatt, director in-charge of the institute, said the device would be useful for forest and ecological studies in the Himalayan region.
“The instrument, which combines tree circumference measurement and quadrat establishment in a single portable tool, has been designed for accuracy, repeatability and efficiency,” Bhatt said.
He added that by integrating multiple field functions, the instrument reduces the need for separate measuring tools, simplifying data collection for researchers engaged in forest inventory, biodiversity assessment and long-term ecological studies across the Himalayan region.
The device was developed through a collaboration among the institute’s researchers and scientists, including Bhatt, Dr Asheesh Pandey, Dr Ashutosh Kumar, N Parihar and Prem Ranjan.
