Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Oct 16 The district administration of Hingoli in Maharashtra has directed sugar mills in the district to harvest sugarcane manually instead of machines and reserve 30 per cent of the yield that can be used as cattle fodder in a bid to tackle the shortage of feed for livestock during drought.
All five talukas of Hingoli district have been declared drought-hit, prompting the administration to take measures to ensure fodder availability for livestock, Collector Rahul Gupta said in a press release.
Sugarcane and its tops are useful as animal fodder. However, when harvesting is carried out using machines, the cane tops are often left in the fields and go wasted, it said.
But manual harvesting would help make the cane tops available for cattle which will be helpful in meeting fodder shortage in the district, the release said.
Gupta instructed sugar mills to implement the directions in their areas to ensure adequate fodder supply during the drought situation.
