Mohali, Oct 25 A patient at the sub-divisional Kharar hospital in Punjab’s Mohali was accused of assaulting a medical officer as he allegedly grabbed her hair, pinned her to the ground, and even tore her shirt, police said on Sunday.

The incident occurred on Saturday night when the accused, identified as Rajatpal Singh, a resident of Kharar, became aggressive and allegedly assaulted the doctor and other medical staff members, police added.

Singh was subsequently arrested.

He had gone to the hospital that evening when he allegedly attacked the doctor and several staff members, also vandalising hospital property. Hospital staff managed to subdue him following the alleged attack.

According to a hospital staff member, when the doctor and a nurse approached Singh to provide treatment, he allegedly turned violent.

The police have registered a case based on the doctor’s complaint under relevant sections including Sections 115 (2) (voluntary hurt), 132 (assaulting a public servant), 221 (obstructing a public servant in the discharge of public functions) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Public Property Prevention of Damage Act at Kharar police station.

The Punjab Civil Medical Services Association (PCMSA) condemned the incident and demanded a proper security framework for doctors. In a statement on Sunday, PCMSA president Dr Akhil Sareen said the association had received a representation regarding the incident.

The association said that there allegedly were no security arrangements at the hospital at the time of the attack, which has caused outrage among members of the PCMS cadre.

Additionally, the PCMSA reiterated its demand for the deployment of 287 security guards at sub-divisional hospitals throughout the state. It said the proposal was at an advanced stage of consideration at the Punjab Health Systems Corporation (PHSC) and should be implemented without further delay.

The PCMSA has set November 12 as a deadline for the implementation of Phase II of the security framework, which aims to enhance safety at all sub-divisional hospitals across Punjab.
