New Delhi, Oct 21 The Old RTR flyover carriageway towards Vasant Vihar from the IGI Airport side has been closed until October 25 after the Delhi Traffic Police detected cracks in the road at two locations, officials said on Wednesday.
According to the Delhi Traffic Police advisory, vehicles heading to Vasant Vihar are being diverted to the adjoining service road, causing traffic congestion and long queues behind the flyover. Officials said after police noticed the cracks, they alerted the Public Works Department (PWD) to repair them as a precautionary measure to prevent accidents. They said the repair work is expected to be completed by the morning of October 26.
A traffic police official said the damage at both locations required closing the entire carriageway, as keeping even part of the flyover open was not feasible. The traffic police has updated Google Maps to reflect the diversion via the service road and marked the flyover as closed. Personnel have also been deployed to regulate traffic, and the traffic police said they have issued an advisory on social media.
The PWD, in coordination with the Delhi Traffic Police, is repairing both affected stretches.
Separately, the traffic police said they may impose traffic restrictions, regulations, and diversions on several roads around Rajghat on Thursday for a programme scheduled from 10 am to noon. The restrictions will be implemented depending on traffic conditions and operational requirements.
The roads likely to be affected include BSZ Marg between ITO Chowk and Delhi Gate; the stretch between Shanti Van Chowk and IP Flyover; Asaf Ali Road between Delhi Gate and N S Marg; the stretch between Shanti Van Chowk and Nishad Raj Marg; the road between Guru Nanak Chowk and Ranjeet Singh Flyover; and the stretch between Rajghat DTC Depot and Ring Road Bypass.
Officials said traffic diversions may be put in place at ITO Chowk, Delhi Gate, Guru Nanak Chowk, Shanti Van Chowk, Rajghat DTC Depot and IP Flyover, depending on the situation.
Commuters have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel towards Astha Kunj Park, Nehru Place and adjoining roads during the repair work. They should use alternative routes whenever possible and avoid roadside or unauthorised parking near the venue.
