Gorakhpur, Oct 15 A 26-year-old man was allegedly shot dead on Thursday by his cousin over a longstanding land dispute in Karanpura village here, police said.

The victim, Shivam Pandey, sustained a bullet injury in the abdomen and died near a culvert while attempting to flee.

The accused, Radheshyam Pandey alias Radhai, fled the spot after the incident. The victim’s family said a longstanding dispute over land had been going on between the two sides.

According to police, Sudama Pandey alias Gama, a resident of Methauli, has land in Karanpura village, where his other brothers live and engage in farming. The two sides had reportedly been at loggerheads over the property for a long time.

On Thursday around 11.30 am, Shivam reached the field to get it ploughed.

However, his cousin Radhai objected to the ploughing, triggering an altercation between the two sides. The tractor subsequently left the spot.

Radhai’s brother allegedly arrived at the scene after the tractor had left and provoked him to shoot Shivam.

Radhai then allegedly opened fire, hitting Shivam in the abdomen.

Despite being seriously injured, Shivam tried to escape but collapsed near a culvert in the village and died.

On receiving information, Harpur Budhat SHO Prashant Pathak reached the spot with police personnel. The body was sent for postmortem examination.

Pathak said police were searching for the accused.
