Dharamshala (HP), Oct 27 BJP leader Sudhir Sharma on Tuesday said remarks made by Mallikarjun Kharge against Prime Minister Narendra Modi crossed the boundaries of political decency and demanded that the Congress president issue an unconditional apology to the PM.

In a statement issued here, Sharma said the Congress failed to raise substantive public issues and was resorting to personal attacks to remain in the political spotlight.

Kharge sparked a controversy when he said “Modi ka baap bhi jayega” in response to an audience member’s comment that “the prime minister will not go anywhere” during a programme in Patna on Sunday to celebrate the 139th birth anniversary of Bihar’s first chief minister Shrikrishna Singh.

The BJP on Monday held nationwide protests over Kharge’s remarks and demanded an apology from him and the Congress.

Sharma said such remarks were unbecoming of a national political party and violated the basic norms of political discourse.

The BJP MLA from Dharamshala said such remarks were a reflection of the Congress’ desperation.

He said that having failed to raise substantive public issues, the Congress was resorting to personal attacks to remain in the political spotlight.

Referring to a video purportedly showing empty chairs in the auditorium where Kharge was addressing the gathering on Sunday, Sharma said the scene reflected the Congress’ declining political fortunes.

He also questioned the party’s ability to connect with the public.

He said the Congress had lost public confidence and asserted that voters would reject its “politics of personal attacks”.
