Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 27 The Keralam Police Cyber Division on Tuesday cautioned the public against cyber fraud involving fake pop-up messages on mobile phones.
In a statement, the police said messages prompting users to update their phones or remove viruses could be traps set by fraudsters to deceive them.
Clicking on such pop-ups, mistaking them for genuine alerts, could cause phones to restart and potentially allow fraudsters to access personal information and banking transactions, the statement said.
Such scams could result in financial losses and the theft of sensitive personal information, it warned, adding that a single click could jeopardise users’ finances, privacy and peace of mind.
The police advised the public not to click on pop-up messages asking them to update their phones or remove viruses. They also cautioned users against sharing personal or banking details with anyone and urged them to be wary of allowing others to access their phones remotely.
In case of doubt, users should consult family members or contact the cyber police for assistance, the statement said.
Those who fall victim to online financial fraud should immediately report it by calling the national cybercrime helpline at 1930 or visiting www.cybercrime.gov.in, the police added.
