Chandigarh, Oct 22 The Shiromani Akali Dal on Thursday demanded exemplary punishment in the murder case of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota and said a party delegation would meet the Punjab governor on October 23 to seek the dismissal of the Bhagwant Mann government.

In a post on X, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal said that during its meeting with Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, the party would also seek compensation of Rs 2 crore for Jhota’s family.

Known for raising his voice against the illegal sale of addictive substances at chemist shops, Jhota was shot dead by a medical store owner in Mansa on October 13 after the activist questioned him for selling addictive drugs to an elderly man.

The incident occurred when Jhota was hosting a Facebook Live.

“Shiromani Akali Dal stands firmly with the family of Shaheed Bhai Parvinder Singh Jhota in its fight to eradicate drugs and to ensure exemplary punishment for all those who murdered the anti-drug crusader, as well as their patrons,” Badal said.

He said he had earlier written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for a CBI probe into the murder of Jhota.

“After writing to Union Home Minister Shri @AmitShah for a CBI probe (which has now begun), we are meeting the Punjab Governor tomorrow (Friday) to demand the dismissal of this drug-peddling @AamAadmiParty govt in Punjab,” the SAD president said.

Badal said his party would urge the governor to grant Rs 2 crore compensation to Jhota’s family and a government job to the wife of the activist.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the investigation into the murder case this week and a team of experts reached Mansa.
