Hyderabad, Oct 22 An unemployed couple was arrested here for allegedly resorting to chain snatching to fund their daily expenses and upcoming wedding, police said on Thursday.

The duo, aged 23 and 24, natives of Andhra Pradesh, were apprehended on October 21 for snatching a gold ornament from a 66-year-old woman.

On October 18, both the accused snatched a gold ‘pustelathadu’ (ornament) weighing approximately 30 grams from the elderly woman, while she was cleaning the Raja Rajeshwari Temple at Venkataramana Colony, Hasthinapuram.

After committing the offence, both accused fled and subsequently attempted to sell the stolen gold but could not find a buyer, police said. Based on a complaint, a case was registered.

The two accused were apprehended near a jewellery shop at Kamala Nagar, Vanasthalipuram on October 21, police said.

“The couple was in a live-in relationship, and planned to get married, but did not have money. They knew each other for the past one-and-half years. As they were jobless, they resorted to chain snatching to cover their living costs and marriage expenses,” a police official said.

The stolen gold ornament and two mobile phones were recovered during the investigation, police added.
