Bilaspur (HP), Oct 20 The Himachal Pradesh Fisheries Department has begun stocking fish fingerlings in the state’s major reservoirs to boost fish production and strengthen the livelihoods of local fishermen.

The initiative began recently at Luhnu in Bilaspur, with 2,05,866 Catla and Silver Carp fingerlings, procured from Kolkata in West Bengal through a contractor, released into Govind Sagar Lake.

Director of the Fisheries Department Om Kant Thakur said on Tuesday that the department annually stocks fish seeds in major reservoirs, including Govind Sagar, Pong Dam, Kol Dam and Chamera Dam, to support the livelihoods of local fishermen.

The fingerlings were released into Govind Sagar Lake in the presence of departmental officials, local fishermen and members of fisheries cooperative societies, he said.

The department procures fish seeds from outside the state through contractors and releases them into various reservoirs in a phased manner, Thakur said.

He said high-quality Catla and Silver Carp fingerlings were sourced from West Bengal for the initiative to enhance fish production in the lake.

There has been a consistent demand for the annual stocking of high-quality fish seeds in the state’s major reservoirs, including Govind Sagar Lake, he said.

The initiative is expected to boost fish production in the lake and provide economic benefits to local fishermen in the coming years.
