Chandigarh, Oct 25 Former Congress MLA Raminder Singh Awla joined the Shiromani Akali Dal on Sunday, months ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections due early next year.
Welcoming Awla into the party fold, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal said in an X post, “It is a pleasure to welcome senior Congress leader and former MLA from Jalalabad, Raminder Singh Awla, into the Shiromani Akali Dal.”
“Jalalabad gave me the opportunity to serve it thrice. It is also a constituency that witnessed revolutionary developments during Akali governments,” he added.
Badal said he is confident that Awla will put in his best to strengthen the SAD in the constituency and in the entire border belt to ensure the party’s victory in 2027.
Speaking to reporters, Awla said Badal understands the pain faced by the people of Punjab and their resolutions.
“A regional party is essential for Punjab and Punjabiyat. I am grateful to Sukhbir Badal and the entire SAD leadership for choosing me to serve Punjab. I was for Punjab, I am for Punjab, and I will always remain committed to Punjab,” Awla said.
Awla won the Jalalabad seat in Fazilka district in a bypoll in 2019, defeating SAD candidate Raj Singh Dibbipura. Badal had won the seat thrice – 2009, 2012, 2017.
The 2019 by-election was necessitated after Badal resigned from the seat following his election to the Lok Sabha from Ferozepur.
