Dehradun, Oct 15 Proposals for eco-sensitive zones (ESZ) within Rajaji National Park and Valley of Flowers National Park should strike a balance between ecological conservation and local public sentiment, Uttarakhand government officials said on Thursday.

Principal secretary for environment protection and climate change, R K Sudhanshu, conducted a review meeting on Thursday wherein detailed discussion took place on various aspects, such as the extent and area of the proposed ESZs, the Zonal Master Plan, the constitution of a monitoring committee, and the classification of activities within these zones categorised as prohibited, regulated, or permitted.

“The proposals must be rigorously evaluated, taking into account the geographical conditions, environmental sensitivity, and the needs of the local population. While preparing proposals for eco-sensitive zones, a balance should be maintained between ecological conservation and local sentiments, ensuring that both environmental protection and local interests are given due consideration,” said the principal secretary.

He further directed officials to conduct a thorough examination of all aspects of the proposals and ensure that necessary follow-up actions are taken.

Officials were instructed that, regarding various activities within these zones, coordination should be established with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB).

Regarding the proposed ESZs for Rajaji National Park, the principal secretary instructed that guidance be sought during the upcoming cabinet meeting to address related challenges.

He also emphasised obtaining legal counsel and preparing a formal response detailing the current status within the state to be submitted within one week, in compliance with the directives of the Supreme Court.

The official also stressed the need to pay special attention to movement within the area and the carrying capacity for tourists.
