Gangtok, Oct 26 The opposition Congress will train ‘Vote Rakshaks’ across Sikkim’s six districts to help voters verify their names in electoral rolls and address registration-related issues, a party leader said on Monday.

Addressing a press conference in Gangtok, Congress observer for the state Saif Ali Naqvi said the initiative undertaken as part of the ‘Vote Bachao Desh Bachao Abhiyan’ will continue until November 26, with meetings planned at the village level across the state.

Naqvi also questioned the appointment of Sikkim Governor Dushyant Gautam, alleging that it could shield him from scrutiny in connection with the murder of Ankita Bhandari in Uttarakhand.

He urged President Droupadi Murmu and the Supreme Court to take cognisance of the matter and called for an investigation into the allegations, which remain unverified.

Naqvi accused the BJP-led central government of undermining the independence of the Election Commission and questioned the appointment process of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

He also demanded greater transparency in electoral roll revisions.
