Chandigarh, Oct 15 BJP MP Naveen Jindal has written to Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya for establishing an outlying campus or regional centre of the National Sports University in Kurukshetra.

In his letter dated October 9, Jindal, the MP from Kurukshetra in Haryana, highlighted that the state has emerged as one of India’s leading sporting powerhouses, particularly in disciplines such as wrestling, boxing, athletics, shooting and kabaddi.

Establishing a national-level sports university campus in the state will significantly boost athletes, coaches, sports professionals and researchers across the northern region, he said.

In his letter, Jindal mentioned that the National Sports University was established under the National Sports University Act, 2018 (No. 25 of 2018) as a specialised national institution for promoting education and training in sports sciences, sports technology, sports management and sports coaching, besides functioning as a national training centre for select sports disciplines, with its headquarters in Manipur.

The Act, while providing for the University to be established in Manipur, also expressly enables it to establish and maintain outlying campuses, colleges, regional centres and study centres at other places in India, and extends to the whole of India, he wrote.

“In this context, I would like to place before you the proposal for establishing an outlying campus or regional centre of the National Sports University at Kurukshetra, which can serve as an important centre for sports education, sports science, coaching and athlete development in the northern region,” Jindal wrote.

A national-level institution in Haryana would complement the sporting ecosystem in the state and create greater opportunities for athletes, coaches, sports professionals and researchers, he said.

He mentioned that Kurukshetra offers a robust educational hub with premier institutions such as NIT Kurukshetra, Kurukshetra University and Shri Krishna AYUSH University, enabling interdisciplinary collaboration in sports technology, sports psychology, physical education and rehabilitation.

“The proposed centre could, subject to the assessment of the University and the ministry, focus on areas such as sports science and rehabilitation, coaching education, sports technology and biomechanics, para-sports and scientific research in traditional Indian sporting disciplines,” Jindal said in the letter.

Jindal requested the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to grant in-principle approval and direct the concerned officials and the National Sports University to evaluate Kurukshetra’s suitability.

“I am hopeful that the proposal will receive your kind consideration and that, with the support of the Ministry and the National Sports University, we can take this initiative forward.

“Strengthening our sporting ecosystem through education, training and sports science would be a meaningful contribution towards Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s vision of a Viksit Bharat, while further advancing the vision of a Viksit Haryana,” he said.
