Amritsar, Oct 22 AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh on Thursday accused the BJP of misusing central agencies and the drug issue for electoral gains while targeting the Bhagwant Mann government in Punjab.
He said the BJP was attempting to divert attention from its own “failures” by politicising drugs ahead of the 2027 Punjab assembly elections.
Singh was in Amritsar, where he appeared before a local court to record his statement in a defamation case filed by Shiromani Akal Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia.
Singh said his statement had been recorded and he had complete faith in the judiciary.
He said the case had been going on for nearly 10 years, with lawyers presenting their arguments in courts in both Ludhiana and Amritsar.
Launching an attack on opposition parties in Punjab, Singh said that the BJP was “systematically misusing” investigative agencies to win elections.
He accused the party of fabricating false and baseless cases against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders, citing the cases against Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain in Delhi, and similar tactics were being deployed in Punjab.
Singh said the people of Punjab will see through these “dirty political tactics”.
Alleging that Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was mistreated at Delhi airport, Singh said keeping a sitting chief minister waiting at the airport for three hours was an insult to Punjab and its people.
He also criticised the entry of Delhi Police personnel into a gurdwara with shoes during a recent protest in Delhi, urging the BJP not to disrespect Punjab and its people.
Questioning the BJP’s newfound concerns for Punjab, he accused the BJP of making drugs a major election issue only because Punjab’s elections were approaching.
Recalling his tenure as AAP’s Punjab in-charge from 2015 to 2017, Singh accused the SAD-BJP government of pushing Punjab into the drug crisis and allowing a massive drug trade to flourish.
He said the subsequent Congress government also failed to take effective action during its five years in power.
In contrast, he said, the Mann government had registered more than 96,000 cases related to drugs and taken action against those involved.
