Mumbai, Oct 22 The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Thursday demanded an independent and transparent probe into the suicide of a second-year chemical engineering student at the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) here.

It also sought the setting up of a mental health counselling centre and an effective grievance redressal mechanism for students.

In a representation to the institute’s director, the ABVP’s Mumbai unit expressed grief over the death of Siddhesh Patil and called for urgent measures to address academic stress and mental health concerns among students.

Patil, hailing from Nashik and a second-year engineering student of the government-run Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), allegedly died by suicide inside his hostel room in central Mumbai on Tuesday.

The student organisation has put forward three key demands, including the formation of an independent committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.

It has also urged the institute to establish a dedicated mental health counselling centre to ensure students can access professional support when needed.

The ABVP further demanded an effective grievance redressal mechanism to address students’ academic difficulties, hostel-related problems and other complaints in a timely manner.

The organisation said educational institutions must take academic pressure, mental health concerns and students’ difficulties seriously and ensure they have access to counselling and an appropriate platform to raise their grievances.

The over-90-year-old ICT is a premier public deemed university, specialising in chemical engineering, chemical technology, and pharmacy.
