New Delhi, Oct 30 Participants took on the roles of senior political leaders as a mock parliament on the theme ‘Democracy vs Anarchy’ began at the NDMC Convention Centre in Delhi on Friday, with discussions centred on electoral integrity, democratic institutions, and political accountability, officials said.
Organised by civil rights group Citizens for Democracy, the session sought to recreate parliamentary proceedings, with participants engaging in debates, raising questions, and presenting arguments on contemporary political and constitutional issues.
The discussions covered the independence and credibility of democratic institutions, parliamentary decorum, transparency in the electoral process and the role of protests in a democracy, an official said.
The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), the role of the Election Commission and allegations of ‘vote theft’ also featured among the issues taken up during the simulated parliamentary proceedings.
Participants portraying leaders from both the ruling side and the Opposition presented differing perspectives on recent political developments, with the exercise incorporating questions, arguments and counterarguments.
The event comes ahead of the INDIA bloc’s November 1 rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan against alleged electoral irregularities and the SIR exercise. The opposition alliance is also scheduled to hold a proposed ‘public impeachment’ of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence on Friday.
Posters announcing the mock parliament, titled ‘Voice of Today’s Youth’, were put up at several locations in the national capital. The venue was designed to resemble the interiors of Parliament House, with an elaborate Parliament-themed setup.
