Akola, Oct 30 The Maharashtra State Seeds Corporation Limited (Mahabeej) has planned the availability of 3.98 lakh quintals of seeds for the 2026-27 Rabi season to ensure timely access to quality seeds and help farmers prepare for possible moisture stress amid concerns over El Niño, an official has said.

Mahabeej Managing Director Deelip Swami told PTI on Wednesday that the corporation has projected a total availability of 3,98,493 quintals of seeds. Gram accounts for the largest share at 2,75,753 quintals, followed by 1,20,898 quintals of wheat, jowar and other cereals.

The plan also includes 1,842 quintals of safflower, linseed and mustard, and 12,185 quintals of groundnut and sesame seeds.

The corporation is also promoting crop varieties suited to relatively low-moisture conditions, enabling farmers to choose seeds based on local soil moisture and climatic conditions, the official said.

For the following Rabi season, Mahabeej has set a seed production target of 3.10 lakh quintals. Its ongoing production programme covers gram, Rabi jowar, wheat and oilseeds. Additionally, it has undertaken the production of 24,000 quintals of animal feed and fodder to address livestock requirements.

Swami said Mahabeej’s five-point strategy focuses on providing suitable crop varieties, quality seeds with high germination rates, efficient distribution, adequate planning time for farmers and reasonable pricing.

Headquartered in Akola, Mahabeej plays a key role in the production and supply of agricultural seeds across Maharashtra.
