New Delhi, Oct 29 Five complex cancer surgeries were performed in a single day at a hospital here using the next-generation ‘da Vinci 5 robotic surgical system’, treating patients with cancers of the tongue, gallbladder, urinary bladder and endometrium.

The procedures were led by Dr Surender Kumar Dabas, chairman of Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Centre and Onco Robotic Surgeries, and his team, the Manipal Hospital, Dwarka, said in a statement.

The surgeries included robotic neck dissection for tongue cancer in a 52-year-old man, radical cholecystectomy for gallbladder cancer in a 60-year-old woman and radical cystectomy for urinary bladder cancer in a 73-year-old man.

The team also performed robotic surgeries for endometrial cancer in two women aged 50 and 53, according to the hospital.

The da Vinci 5 system incorporates more than 150 design enhancements and features three-dimensional visualisation, improved instrument control, increased computing capabilities and force feedback technology, allowing surgeons to sense the forces applied to tissues through the system’s controls.

These features may help surgeons perform intricate procedures with greater control, particularly when operating near vital organs, blood vessels and delicate tissues.

Potential benefits for eligible patients include smaller incisions, reduced blood loss and post-operative discomfort, and quicker recovery, depending on the procedure and the patient’s condition.

“Cancer surgeries can be particularly challenging when tumours are located close to vital organs, blood vessels and delicate tissues. With these new advancements coming in, patients’ trauma in these complex surgeries is minimised,” Dabas said.

“Performing five different cancer surgeries in a single day highlights the transformative power of robotic surgery in modern oncology. Robot-assisted techniques provide surgeons with unmatched precision, 3D visualization, and advanced navigation, making tumor extraction easier and leading to gentler patient care,” he added. The hospital said it continues to integrate advanced surgical technology with clinical expertise to provide cancer care, with treatment approaches tailored to individual patients.

Manipal Hospitals operates a network of 50 hospitals with more than 13,400 licensed beds across 14 states and Union Territories, according to the hospital group.
