Alappuzha (Keralam), Oct 29 The State Child Rights Commission on Thursday said that it has registered a case based on news reports that a specific group is trying to buy kids from unmarried mothers in this coastal Keralam district.
The group’s activities are centred around the Alappuzha medical college hospital, the commission said in a statement.
The case was registered by commission member T C Jalajamol, it said.
The action was taken following a news report in which the secretary of the District Child Welfare Committee was quoted as saying that a group is approaching unmarried mothers to buy their children and they also approached the committee asking if they had any children to sell.
The committee office bearer also revealed that the group allegedly buys newborn babies for more than Rs 25,000 and then sells them for lakhs, the statement said.
The commission has sought an explanation from the district police chief, the district child welfare committee chairperson and the superintendent of Alappuzha Medical College Hospital in connection with the matter, it said.
