Chennai, Oct 28 A delegation of IUML leaders met the DGP on Wednesday to demand stringent legal action and heightened security following recent attacks on mosques in the Koyambedu and Vadapalani areas of the city.

The delegation, led by Indian Union Muslim League Tamil Nadu State General Secretary K A M Muhammed Abubacker, submitted a detailed memorandum to the top police officials, urging a fair and transparent investigation into the incidents.

Addressing a press conference after the meeting, Abubacker expressed deep concern over the recurring episodes of vandalism, specifically highlighting the recent attack on an Imam at a mosque in Jai Nagar, Koyambedu.

In late October, the Jai Nagar mosque was targeted, and an Imam was reportedly attacked. The sequence of unrest allegedly began on October 14, when an early morning attack occurred at a prominent mosque on Gangai Amman Koil Street in Vadapalani.

“We have apprised the DGP of the orchestrated nature of these attacks on our places of worship in Koyambedu and Vadapalani,” Abubacker told reporters.

“These are deliberate attempts to disturb the communal harmony of Tamil Nadu. The police must not brush off the Koyambedu incident as the mere act of a ‘mentally ill’ individual without a thorough probe. We demand accountability, unmasking of the real culprits behind the screen, and justice through the law,” he claimed.

The political intervention comes in the wake of heightened tensions and localised protests by community members after miscreants allegedly vandalised mosque premises and assaulted religious staff. Initial claims by the local police that the Koyambedu attacker might be mentally unstable had sparked scepticism and demands for a deeper inquiry from Muslim organisations.

Abubacker said the DGP was receptive to their concerns and had assured the delegation of an impartial, swift investigation.

“The DGP has promised us that the perpetrators will be brought to book regardless of their affiliations, and that night patrols and police security will be immediately bolstered around all mosques in the affected zones to prevent any untoward incidents,” the IUML leader added.

The IUML has appealed to the public to maintain peace and not fall prey to rumours while law enforcement agencies conduct their investigation.
