Sriharikota (Andhra Pradesh), Oct 28 : The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to launch its NVS-03 navigation satellite aboard a Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) rocket on October 30, 2026. The GSLV-F18/NVS-03 mission is scheduled to lift off at 11:51 pm from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

The NVS-03 satellite is the third spacecraft in India’s second-generation navigation satellite series. The mission aims to strengthen the Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) system and ensure the continuity of India’s regional navigation services.

NVS-03 Satellite to Improve NavIC Navigation Services

The NVS-03 navigation satellite is designed to enhance India’s independent satellite navigation capabilities. It will support the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS), which provides positioning, navigation and timing services across India and surrounding regions.

The satellite will carry an indigenous atomic clock along with procured atomic clocks. It will also introduce the L1 frequency band in addition to the existing L5 and S-band signals, expanding NavIC’s navigation capabilities.

The system is designed to provide coverage across India’s landmass and an area extending approximately 1,500 km beyond the country’s geopolitical boundary.

ISRO’s Second-Generation NavIC Satellite Programme

ISRO has planned five second-generation navigation satellites — NVS-01, NVS-02, NVS-03, NVS-04 and NVS-05 — to strengthen the existing NavIC constellation and improve service continuity.

NVS-01, the first satellite in this series, was launched aboard the GSLV-F12 rocket on May 29, 2023. It marked a significant milestone as the first satellite to carry an indigenously developed atomic clock.

The additional L1 frequency band incorporated into the NVS series is intended to expand navigation services and improve the system’s capabilities.

What Is India’s NavIC Navigation System?

Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) is India’s independent regional satellite navigation system. It provides Position, Velocity and Timing (PVT) services to users across India and the surrounding region, extending approximately 1,500 km beyond the Indian landmass.

According to ISRO, NavIC offers two types of services: Standard Positioning Service (SPS) for civilian users and Restricted Service (RS) for authorised users.

The launch of NVS-03 is an important step in strengthening India’s satellite navigation infrastructure and maintaining reliable navigation services for users in the country and neighbouring regions.
