Tinsukia (Assam), Oct 28 A video clip purportedly showing Assam minister Biswajit Daimary praising the ULFA, saying the banned militant outfit had “protected the state from outside forces for over five decades”, has gone viral on social media.

He also lauded the Moran and Matak communities for assuming leadership roles in the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA).

The video purportedly showed the sports and youth welfare minister making the statements at the central foundation day celebration of the Matak Yuva Chhatra Sanmilan at Dirak Nawajyoti village in Tinsukia’s Kakopathar on Tuesday.

PTI, however, could not independently verify the veracity of the video. Repeated calls and WhatsApp messages to the minister for his comments also went unanswered.

“Because of the ULFA, no one had been able to lay a hand on Assam in the last 50 years,” Daimary was heard saying in the video.

He was conferred the Bengmara Samanway Award-2026 at the function.

The minister said although some people may criticise ULFA, “no force could do anything to destabilise Assam only because of the underground organisation”.

“The people who provided ULFA with its core leadership were from the Moran and Matak communities. Even Paresh Baruah (ULFA chief) is from the Matak community,” he added.

Daimary said the state’s situation in the last five decades “would have been very different without the contributions of the Moran and Matak communities”.

“Only God knows what the condition of Assam would have been had the Moran and Matak people not been there,” he added.

The minister said the magnitude of illegal immigration from Bangladesh would not have been so severe in the western Assam districts if the region had Matak and Moran communities, who primarily inhabit the eastern Assam districts.

He said it was the government’s responsibility to protect the interests of the Moran and Matak communities.
