Shillong, Oct 28 Senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Wednesday said the party is working to revive its fortunes and reclaim lost political ground in the North East region.
Chowdhury blamed political poaching and communal polarisation for the party’s decline, alleging that the ruling dispensation was using narrow politics to weaken the Congress and retain power.
The four Congress MLAs in Meghalaya had joined the ruling National People’s Party (NPP).
“The North East is a region where we have to strive hard to restore our lost ground. In Meghalaya also, like other states, we have been subjected to political poaching by the ruling dispensation,” he said after meeting party leaders and workers in Shillong.
Targeting the BJP and its allies, the NPP, he alleged that most regional parties in the northeast had become alliance partners of the government and were exhausting their resources to weaken the Congress.
Despite the setbacks, Chowdhury said the party’s cadre remained enthusiastic and was working on strategies to rebuild the organisation.
“You have observed today the enthusiasm of our party workers at the party office. We have been discussing our strategies. Like in other parts of the country, the Congress here too is rejuvenating,” he said.
Expressing confidence in the party’s revival, he asserted that the Congress would regain the political ground it had lost across the region.
“Every inch of the NE region which we have lost will be restored by whatever means. Today or tomorrow, the NE will again be back in the fold of the Congress party,” he added.
