Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 28 Keralam Chief Minister V D Satheesan on Wednesday said the government had so far sanctioned Rs 298.63 crore for the Priyadarshini scheme, which provides free travel on KSRTC ordinary buses for women and transgender persons.

The scheme is one of the Indira guarantees announced by the Congress-led UDF during the Assembly election campaign.

In a post on X, Satheesan said Rs 88.23 crore had been sanctioned to cover the cost of free travel in September alone.

As many as 4.16 crore free journeys were made under the scheme in September, an increase of 44.28 lakh from August, he said.

“Since its launch on June 15, the scheme has helped reduce women’s travel expenses and strengthen their financial security,” Satheesan said.

He added that the government was covering the revenue shortfall incurred by Kerala State Road Transport Corporation under the scheme, ensuring that the cost of the benefit would not be passed on to passengers.
