Chandigarh, Oct 27 Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday lashed out at the Congress, accusing it of boycotting the last day of the state Assembly session here.
He further said the opposition party’s conduct in the Vidhan Sabha “exposed” a contradiction between its public statements and actions.
“Their only job is to create a ruckus and walk out. Earlier, they said the session is not called. When it is convened, they do not come. If they come (to the House), then they do not sit. The Congress has no agenda,” Mann said while speaking to reporters here.
Mann further said that while the opposition party claims to oppose the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, its members walked away when they had the opportunity to participate in a meaningful discussion on this issue in the Vidhan Sabha last week.
“Their actions speak for themselves,” Mann said.
On Tuesday, heated exchanges took place between the Congress and AAP legislators outside the Assembly on the last day of the session after the opposition MLAs alleged that they were prevented from entering the House.
On another issue, Mann said that AAP would seek a fresh mandate on the strength of its “pro-people governance”, including quality schools and hospitals, free electricity, health insurance and financial assistance for women.
On the Mawan Dheeyan Satkar Yojna’s financial assistance scheme for women, Mann said the initiative was rooted in the principle of ensuring dignity, respect and financial support for women.
“The objective is to empower women so that they can live with confidence and self-respect without having to depend on others for their basic needs. Women’s welfare, dignity and financial independence must remain at the centre of governance,” he said.
Lamenting the politicisation of a welfare initiative intended for women, he questioned how the Congress could justify opposing or undermining a measure designed to improve their lives.
“Our government remains committed to policies that put women first and provide them with meaningful support,” he added.
