Chandigarh, Oct 26 The BJP’s Haryana unit held protests on Monday over Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s controversial remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s late father.

Kharge sparked a controversy on Sunday with his “Modi ka baap bhi jayega” remark in response to an audience member’s comment that “the prime minister would not go anywhere”, during an event in Patna.

Kharge was speaking at the programme to celebrate the 139th birth anniversary of Bihar’s first chief minister, Shrikrishna Singh.

In Ambala Cantonment, Energy, Transport and Labour Minister Anil Vij burned Kharge’s effigy. Vij said the country would never tolerate Kharge’s ‘insult’ towards the prime minister.

“Attempts to create anarchy in the country under the slogan of “change the regime” would not be tolerated on Indian soil,” he said.

Advising the Congress, he said, “By all means, engage in politics, but also respect the culture of this country. If opposition leaders want to express their views, they should do so in a dignified and appropriate manner.”

After burning Kharge’s effigy in Ambala Cantonment, Vij addressed BJP workers and other people present at the site.

Speaking on the occasion, Vij said India is a democracy where different political parties are entitled to hold differing opinions, adding that reviewing the government’s functioning and examining its policies are legitimate rights of every opposition party.

However, Vij said, the opposition must also observe certain standards and ethical boundaries.

Vij warned the Congress to exercise restraint in its language, actions and thinking, saying that the country would never forgive those who disrespected its culture.

In Rohtak, state BJP president Archana Gupta joined the protest.

Slamming Kharge, Gupta said targeting someone’s family is not in keeping with the decorum of democratic discourse.
