New Delhi, Oct 15 The Social Justice and Empowerment Ministry has directed 764 senior citizen homes to undertake cleanliness, waste management and greening activities as part of an ongoing special government campaign.
The initiative aims to promote hygienic, safe and dignified living conditions for elderly residents, the ministry said in a statement on Thursday.
The senior citizen homes, supported under the Integrated Programme for Senior Citizens (IPSrC), have been asked to undertake cleanliness drives covering residential premises, common areas and surrounding spaces, along with decluttering, waste segregation and disposal, and plantation activities.
The ministry said the campaign, being coordinated by the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG), seeks to promote cleanliness, environmental sustainability and a culture of continuous improvement in public institutions.
The activities are being undertaken under the campaign theme, ‘Swachhata se Samman, Har Varg ka Utthan’, with an emphasis on making cleanliness an integral part of the daily functioning of senior citizen homes, the statement said.
The drives include cleaning residential premises, corridors, dining areas, kitchens and recreational spaces, removing litter and unwanted materials, organising storage spaces and maintaining clear pathways for the safe movement of elderly residents.
The homes have also been encouraged to undertake plantation, maintain gardens and green spaces, and improve the overall upkeep of their campuses.
The ministry has emphasised the active participation of senior citizens, staff members and implementing agencies in the initiative.
Residents are being encouraged to participate in suitable cleanliness, gardening and campus-improvement activities, keeping their health, mobility and individual capacities in mind, it said.
The ministry said the initiative also reflects the principle of Jan Bhagidari, highlighting the role of collective responsibility in maintaining cleanliness and public hygiene.
The participation of senior citizen homes in “Special Campaign 6.0” reinforces the ministry’s commitment to dignified ageing, improved institutional care and active ageing, the statement said.
The ministry will continue to encourage the homes to sustain these practices beyond the campaign period through regular cleanliness schedules, responsible waste management, periodic decluttering and maintenance of green spaces, it added.
