Rajkot, Oct 15 Rajkot police has succeeded in returning land worth approximately Rs 100 crore, taken away through fraud by land mafias and moneylenders, to 55 farmers, who were the righful owners, Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi said on Thursday.

Sanghavi claimed that the recovery of land on such a large scale was unprecedented in the country’s history.

The documents were handed over to the farmers at a programme held in Shapar, where Sanghavi also inaugurated the newly constructed office of the Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Rajkot Rural Division.

“The Rajkot police have succeeded in returning land documents worth approximately Rs 100 crore to around 55 farmers. Those who have never lost land that represents their entire life’s savings cannot understand the suffering these families have endured for years,” he said.

The police and the Special Investigation Team (SIT) have succeeded in providing them enormous relief from this prolonged ordeal, Sanghavi added.

“Moneylenders can hire lawyers and make other arrangements once cases are registered against them. Our poor farmers, meanwhile, are left wondering whether they should run from court to court, pay lawyers’ fees, recover what they have lost or earn a living for their families. They often find no way out of this situation,” Sanghavi said.

Rajya Sabha MP Parshottam Rupala, MLAs, senior police officers, district officials, local leaders and a large number of farmers and citizens attended the programme.
