Hamirpur (HP), Oct 21 The administration has launched a new initiative to strengthen rural sanitation in Nadaun, the home constituency of Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu in Hamirpur district, officials said on Wednesday.
The Panchayati Raj Department has provided 16 e-rickshaws for this purpose, and it will now implement regular garbage collection in 63 gram panchayats in the Nadaun development block. Under the scheme, officials said, panchayats will be divided into 16 clusters and a door-to-door garbage collection system will be established.
Officials said the government’s initiative is expected to ensure proper waste management in villages and curb littering in public places. According to the plan, each cluster will include three to five gram panchayats, and one e-rickshaw will be deployed for each cluster.
Hamirpur Project Officer Asmita Thakur said e-rickshaws will collect garbage in the panchayats. Under this initiative, the panchayats will arrange to collect dry waste from every household. She said the step aims to strengthen the sanitation system in the panchayats. Earlier, due to the lack of regular garbage collection in rural areas, garbage accumulates on roadsides, in drains, and in vacant spaces, she said.
People said, however, the scheme’s true test will be its regular, effective operation. They said it will be important to monitor how regularly the e-rickshaws reach the designated routes for 63 panchayats and how effective the garbage collection system is.
If the scheme operates effectively on the established schedule, it can reduce filth in villages, protect the environment, and increase public participation in cleanliness, the project officer added.
With the state assembly elections just a year away, Sukhu has taken Swachh Bharat Abhiyan steps to provide people with various facilities that were previously out of reach.
