Aizawl, Oct 20 Mizoram Health Minister Lalrinpuii on Tuesday said the state government has been strengthening diagnostic equipment and facilities and upgrading the skills of healthcare workers to facilitate early detection of cancer.

She said that the measures were highlighted at the ‘Scientific Fest 2026 – CME on Breast Cancer: Awareness Today, Healthier Tomorrow’, organised by the Scientific Forum at Zoram Medical College and Hospital (ZMC&H) on Monday.

The minister said that early detection, timely treatment and comprehensive care are crucial in the fight against cancer.

“Mizoram has a high incidence of cancers of the stomach, oesophagus, lungs and breast, making improved diagnostic facilities and greater public awareness important in tackling the disease,” Lalrinpuii said in a post on her official social media handle.

The referral system has also been strengthened to ensure that patients can access appropriate treatment and care at the earliest, she said.

Depending on the type and stage of cancer, patients may require multidisciplinary treatment, including surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Palliative care and psychosocial support are also important to improve the condition and quality of life of cancer patients, the minister said.

Emphasising the importance of early medical consultation, Lalrinpuii urged people not to rely on self-treatment when they notice unusual changes or abnormalities in their bodies, but to consult doctors promptly.

Early diagnosis can help prevent the disease from progressing and provide a better opportunity for effective treatment, she said.

The Health minister also stressed the importance of cancer prevention through health education and healthy lifestyles, including avoiding alcohol and tobacco, maintaining a balanced diet, regular physical activity and following healthy routines.

She called for greater awareness among school and college students and the wider community, saying cancer prevention and health education require the participation of families, communities, educational institutions and churches, besides the Health department.
