Kolkata, Oct 16 To make people aware of India’s spiritual traditions, a recreation of ancient Ram temple architecture, featuring intricate depictions of episodes from the Ramayana, is the central attraction of the Durga puja organised by the Youth Association of Mohammad Ali Park in central Kolkata.

Themed ‘Ancient Ram Mandir’, the puja pandal draws inspiration from the architectural grandeur of traditional temples dedicated to Lord Ram, seeking to showcase India’s rich spiritual and cultural heritage through craftsmanship, traditional art, and elaborate illumination.

General Secretary of the association Surendra Kumar Sharma said the theme was an attempt to bring India’s architectural heritage and spiritual traditions to the forefront while preserving the traditional essence of Durga puja.

The pandal has been designed under the supervision of artist Chiranjib, with plywood and bamboo used as the principal materials.

Depictions of significant episodes from the epic Ramayana and the life of Lord Ram have been incorporated into the installation to offer visitors a glimpse into India’s mythological traditions.

The Durga idol, crafted by artist Kush Bera, features a traditional stone-coloured appearance with a marble-like finish, reminiscent of sculptures found in ancient temples, Sharma said.

Artist Ganesh Mondal has designed an elaborate illumination scheme to highlight the architectural details and enhance the ambience.

The pandal was inaugurated on October 14 in the presence of West Bengal Commerce and Industries Minister Tapas Roy, former councillor Meena Devi Purohit and social worker Binay Dubey, among others.

Established in 1969, the Youth Association of Mohammad Ali Park is among the prominent Durga puja organisers in central Kolkata, drawing lakhs of visitors.
