Gorakhpur (UP), Oct 19 A 45-year-old man was arrested for allegedly attacking his wife with a sickle during a domestic dispute in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur district, leaving her critically injured, police said on Monday.
The incident took place around 5 pm on Sunday in Haraiya village under the Gida police station area, when Jalaluddin alias Pangul allegedly attacked his 40-year-old wife, Safia, following an argument, they said.
The woman sustained serious injuries to her abdomen, head and neck and was rushed to BRD Medical College, where her condition remains critical, the police said.
According to preliminary information, the accused suspected his wife of having an extramarital relationship, which reportedly led to frequent disputes between the couple, police said.
Hearing Safia’s cries for help, local residents rushed to the spot, informed the police and helped take her to the hospital.
The couple have seven children. Their eldest daughter, Rehnuma, lodged a complaint alleging that her father frequently assaulted her mother. An FIR has been registered under charges including attempt to murder, the police said.
Circle Officer (GIDA) Abha Singh said the accused was being questioned and further legal action was underway.
