Kolkata, Oct 22 Crowds thronged major Durga Puja pandals in Kolkata and adjoining Salt Lake on Thursday, as several organisers kept the idols on display a day after Vijaya Dashami, with immersion scheduled for October 23.

While most community puja organisers and households immersed their idols on Wednesday, some major crowd-pulling pandals, including Tridhara in south Kolkata, Mohammed Ali Park in north Kolkata, FD Block in Salt Lake and the New Town fairground, remained open to visitors.

Meanwhile, some community puja organisers were preparing for idol immersion ceremonies this evening.

Police personnel, disaster management teams and municipal workers were deployed in adequate numbers at various immersion ghats along the Hooghly and other rivers, as well as at designated waterbodies in Kolkata, Howrah and other districts, officials said.

Former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly was spotted at his neighbourhood club, Barisha Players’ Corner, at Behala in south Kolkata, amid preparations for the immersion of idols.
