New Delhi, Oct 21 The Delhi government’s e-rickshaw policy aims to improve road safety and streamline operations, Transport Minister Pankaj Singh said on Wednesday.
The government has proposed capping the number of e-rickshaws in the national capital at 2.5 lakh under a draft scheme released on Sunday, citing concerns over traffic congestion, road safety and pollution.
“The objective is to ensure that e-rickshaws operate systematically, provide reliable last-mile connectivity and do not contribute to traffic congestion. Vehicles that fail to meet the prescribed standards, including those built using unsafe ‘jugaad’ techniques, will not be permitted to operate,” the Transport Minister said.
Once the public consultation is complete, we will examine the suggestions received and make changes wherever necessary, Singh said. The Delhi e-Rickshaw (Registration and Operation) Scheme, 2026 is open for public feedback and suggestions for 30 days before it is finalised.
The draft defines an e-rickshaw as a battery-operated three-wheeler with seating for no more than four passengers (excluding the driver), a luggage capacity of 40 kilograms, a net power output of no more than 2,000 watts, and a maximum speed of 25 kmph.
Under the proposed scheme, no e-rickshaw will be allowed to operate unless registered as a transport vehicle and issued a valid E-Rickshaw Compliance Certificate (ECC).
After consulting and finalising the policy, the government proposes to begin implementation within 90 days, the minister added.
