Meerut (UP), Oct 21 The Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) will hold a panchayat in Lucknow on Friday to press for an increase in sugarcane prices.

Hundreds of farmers, led by BKU district president Anurag Chaudhary, will leave for the state capital on Thursday evening by the Nauchandi Express.

Chaudhary said a memorandum had been submitted to railway officials seeking five additional coaches on the train to facilitate the journey of farmers and other passengers.

At a Kisan Diwas meeting chaired by District Magistrate V K Singh on Wednesday, the BKU expressed displeasure over the non-resolution of around 22 issues raised by it last month.

The district magistrate directed the concerned officials to resolve the issues within a week.

The farmers also demanded measures to prevent short-weighing of sugarcane, repairs to damaged roads, correction of errors in land records and adequate availability of diammonium phosphate (DAP) fertiliser.
