New Delhi, Oct 19 Food regulator FSSAI has sanctioned “adjudication proceedings” against Storia Foods & Beverages Pvt Ltd for misleading claims on the label of its pomegranate juice product.
In a social media post on Monday, FSSAI said the product ‘Storia Juice (Pomegranate)’ contains 4 per cent pomegranate juice concentrate and 12 per cent apple juice concentrate, but “its name and imagery may mislead consumers about its composition”.
“The product label did not adequately identify the juice as reconstituted from concentrate, as required under applicable regulations,” the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) said.
Further, the claim “Equivalent to 100% Fruit Juice (Reconstituted)” was found to be non-compliant with the applicable advisory.
There was prominent “No Added Sugar” claim on the front of the pack along with the inconspicuously placed “Contains Naturally Occurring Fruit Sugar” declaration on the back label. This is misleading to consumers.
“Label declarations and claims were found to be in alleged contravention of applicable FSS Regulations. The product was inspected, sampled and subjected to label scrutiny, and the company’s explanation was found unsatisfactory by the competent authority,” the regulator said.
Hence, FSSAI’s competent authority sanctioned adjudication proceedings against the company.
In another post, the regulator informed that notice has been issued to HealthyHey Foods LLP for misleading claims on its cranberry extract product. It has also issued notice to Bakelite Food Processing for misleading labelling and advertising claims on its product ‘Puneri Cream Roll’.
FSSAI has issued notices to BMS Lifescience for misleading claims on its ‘HAOG’s cranberry urinary tract health capsule’. The product is also being marketed and distributed under an expired registration certificate.
