Bengaluru, Oct 26 BJP leaders staged a protest at Freedom Park here on Monday, demanding that Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge apologise to the people of the country over his controversial remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Mallikarjun Kharge made the remarks while addressing a function in Patna to mark the 139th birth anniversary of Bihar’s first Chief Minister Krishna Singh.
Responding to a heckler who shouted that Modi would not go, Kharge retorted, “Modi ka baap bhi jayega, baap bhi jayega” (Even Modi’s father will have to go).
The protesters raised slogans against Kharge, climbed barricades and attempted to march towards Vidhana Soudha, the seat of power.
Police detained several BJP leaders, including Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly R Ashoka, Legislative Council Opposition leader Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, Ashwath Narayan, C P Ramamurthy and MLC N Ravikumar, and took them to Upparpet police station.
“Just two people are enough to destroy the Congress party in the country – the father and the son,” Ashoka said, launching a scathing attack on Kharge and his son (and Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge).
Referring to the two as the senior and younger Kharge, he said, “The senior Kharge and the younger Kharge will destroy the Congress completely”. Ashoka also made remarks about Kharge’s age, saying he should devote himself to prayer and spirituality rather than making such statements.
“When people grow old, they are advised to pray to God and seek salvation. Lord Buddha, Mahavira and Shankaracharya all preached the same message. But this man is behaving as though he has lost his mental faculties,” he said.
