Faridabad, Oct 24 Four police personnel sustained minor injuries and around 20 protesters were detained on Saturday after villagers protesting against a dumping yard in Bhakhri village started hurling stones following an attempt to remove them from the protest site, police said.
A clash broke out between police and villagers in Faridabad during the afternoon following an attempt to remove the protesters staging a sit-in against the establishment of a dumping yard in the village, they said.
In the presence of heavy police force, the Municipal Corporation finally cleared the protest site and has now begun dumping waste there, police said.
For the past month, residents have been opposing the establishment of a dumping yard on land in Bhankri village by the Municipal Corporation and have set up tents at the site and begun a protest.
Earlier, the civic body, with the assistance of the police, had cleared the site. However, just two days later, after being released, they returned and gathered there again, an official said.
Villagers have been staging a protest against the construction of a dumping yard in Bhakhri village, in the Aravalli area for the past 11 days.
As the Aravalli range is ecologically sensitive, the protesting villagers said establishing a dumping yard and disposing of waste there could harm the environment.
Contaminated water (leachate) from the waste could seep into the ground and pollute groundwater, which could have an adverse impact on villagers’ health.
Anil Yadav, Joint Commissioner of Faridabad Municipal Corporation, said that a disposal plan is being prepared.
However, waste collection is also essential; hence, the sit-in protest has been cleared. He said people will witness some relief soon.
