New Delhi, Oct 22 Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Thursday that India is building indigenous capabilities in Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) technology to meet the growing demands of its infrastructure sector.

Vaishnaw, while highlighting in a social media post India’s progress in developing TBM ecosystem, said that TBMs play a crucial role in constructing tunnels for railway, highway and power infrastructure projects.

He said that while India earlier relied on imports, it is now manufacturing TBMs with diameters of 8 metres and 15 metres.

“The country is also preparing to manufacture TBMs with diameters exceeding 16 metres,” he stated.

He added that with manufacturing facilities in Tamil Nadu and growing technical expertise, India is steadily developing a comprehensive TBM ecosystem, covering every stage from design and manufacturing to maintenance.

“This progress reflects the spirit of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, strengthening India’s domestic capabilities in critical infrastructure technology,” Vaishnaw said.
