Bhadohi (UP), Oct 20 Six people sustained burn injuries in a firecracker blast during a Durga idol immersion procession here on Tuesday, police said.
They said the blast triggered a stampede-like situation and some people sustained minor injuries in the melee.
The incident occurred during the immersion procession organised by the Chauri Bazar Durga Puja Committee in the Chauri police station area, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shubham Agrawal said.
A spark from a firecracker lit during the procession landed on a bag of firecrackers that a man, Shubham Vishwakarma (25), was carrying, setting them off and triggering a stampede-like situation, he said.
Six people with burn injuries were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, the ASP said.
Vishwakarma and another youth standing near him, Deepak (20), sustained severe burn injuries. Vishwakarma was referred to the trauma centre in Varanasi in critical condition, Agrawal said.
Those who suffered minor burns were discharged after treatment at the community health centre. The procession was subsequently allowed to proceed for the immersion, the officer said.
