Shimla, Oct 20 Himachal Pradesh BJP’s chief spokesperson Rakesh Jamwal on Tuesday lambasted the Congress government after a mob allegedly attacked police in Kullu and forcibly freed two accused, saying that the incident has exposed the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
MLA Jamwal, in a statement issued here, said that police, following a tip-off, had intercepted two suspects accused of charas trafficking and recovered contraband from them.
“However, a mob of approximately 40 people, including a woman panchayat pradhan, allegedly attacked the police personnel and forcibly rescued the accused. The police subsequently managed to recover 508 grams of charas that had fallen on the road,” he said.
Questioning the functioning of the state government, he said, when criminals dare to attack police personnel and obstruct lawful action against drug trafficking, it reflects a concerning situation for law enforcement in Himachal Pradesh.
Hitting out at Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, who also holds the Home portfolio, Jamwal said he cannot escape accountability for the state’s law-and-order situation.
The BJP leader said such incidents expose the gap between the Congress government’s tall claims and ground realities.
“If police personnel themselves are attacked while performing their duties, how can ordinary citizens feel secure?” Jamwal questioned.
Demanding an explanation from the chief minister, he said the state cannot be allowed to become a safe haven for drug traffickers and those who challenge the authority of the police.
