Kolkata, Oct 20 A fire broke out at a market in the Bagha Jatin area in the southern part of Kolkata on Tuesday, officials said.

There was no report of any death or injury in the incident, they said.

Altogether, 15 fire tenders were deployed to douse the blaze, first spotted around 4.30 am, a fire brigade official said.

“The blaze was brought under control in less than an hour. There was no report of casualties,” he said.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, but a preliminary investigation suggested that it was due to a short circuit, another official said.

The West Bengal government will provide immediate financial assistance to traders whose shops were gutted in the fire at Bagha Jatin market in Jadavpur area and make temporary arrangements for them so that they can resume business at a suitable nearby location, Minister of State for Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Umesh Rai said.

Rai said he visited the fire-ravaged market on the instructions of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari to assess the situation.

Fire and Emergency Services Minister Koushik Chowdhury and senior officials of the department were also present during Rai’s visit.

“The state government stands firmly by the traders affected by this unfortunate incident. On the initiative of the chief minister, arrangements will be made to provide immediate financial assistance to those whose shops were damaged in the fire,” Rai said.

The government would also initiate steps to rebuild the entire market with modern infrastructure, proper planning and adequate fire-safety measures, the minister said.

“Our commitment is to stand by the affected traders, help restore their livelihoods,” Rai said.
