Meerut (UP), Oct 20 A 30-year-old man died after a fire broke out at a house in Mawana town of Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut district early Tuesday, with police investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, an official said.

“The fire was reported around 4 am at a house in Valmiki Gali in the Kabli Gate locality,” Station House Officer Brahm Kumar Tripathi said.

“Fire tenders rushed to the spot and found that the blaze had intensified on the first floor of the house. Local residents informed the firefighters that a man was trapped inside,” he said.

An additional fire tender was called in, while the Mawana fire station’s second officer and the Meerut chief fire officer also reached the spot.

Police and firefighters jointly rescued the man and took him by ambulance to a nearby medical facility, where doctors declared him dead, Tripathi said.

The deceased was identified as Ashu, a resident of Mawana. Two fire tenders were used to bring the blaze under control, the official said.

According to his family members, Ashu had earlier worked as a peon at a bank in Mawana. His wife had been living at her parental home for some time, and he had reportedly been distressed over the situation.

Police said preliminary inquiries indicated a family dispute and suggested that the man was heavily intoxicated. Investigators are also examining the possibility that he may have set himself on fire, though this was yet to be established.

The cause of the fire and the circumstances leading to the man’s death are being investigated, police said.
